now that my teaching year is nearly through, i keep on re-living the lowlights (instructing kids to use bean bag to cover and then catch a rogue cricket; germs; teeth hanging in tiny mouths by the thinnest of threadsasdfsdkaljf) but the goodtimes moments far outweigh the bad.

i made them play the oregon trail game and they LOVE it.  i love that children of the new millennium are coaching their cholera-riddled farming families across a 56-bit prarie schooner on screen.  these games lack the dazzling illustration but you MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS and they were so into that.  we made a lot of crafts with various implements, including but not limited to:  feathers, sugar cubes, pipe cleaners, straws, yarn, clay, flour & water, cornstarch.  second grade is so much more fun when you’re into learning along with the little grubs.  and i am.  i will miss them.

this photo is from when philippe cousteau came to visit our classroom.  he was the sort of person who knew that he was really, really, ridiculously good looking.  he gave me a very new age-y vibe but that’s fine.  when somebody offered him a bottle of water, he told us about the mass of plastic in the pacific ocean that floats around and is the size of texas.  so.  he didn’t want a plastic water bottle.  MAKES SENSE.  i’m glad that i’m rude enough to never ask a person whether they are thirsty and would like a bottle of water.

he showed the kids a bit of his show on the projector.  we saw steve irwin swimming in the ocean with a crocodile.  the kids labeled the presentation and the show segment “pretty good”.  critics, all.
